When I was about 4 years old, my Grandma Erma took a trans-Atlantic cruise onboard the SS France, an ocean liner built in 1963 that looked a lot like The Titanic. Back then, ocean liners were passenger ships, which ferried people and different types of cargo across ocean and seas. She was quite a prolific writer and I am in possession of her travel diary from that journey. The story she told of her journey filled me with a desire to one day travel by ship to distant lands I could only read about. Nearly 4 decades later, in 1997, I took my first cruise, when I said bon voyage to the frozen land of 10,000 lakes and sailed for the warm, Southern Caribbean islands and in 2001, remarkably, sailed on the same ship my grandmother had…the SS France. However, it was now called the SS Norway, having been purchased by Norwegian Cruise Lines in the 1970s and retrofitted to join its fleet of vacation cruise ships.
I’ve sailed quite a bit since then, with good friends, family, and my loving, photographer husband, Kim. Cruising allows us to explore lands and places we’ve never been, meet new people, and experience different cultures, customs, and culinary delights. But, it all starts with the water. President John F. Kennedy touched on this when he said, "We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch it, we are going back from whence we came." We keep going back, there’s no escaping it, because as Jacques Cousteau said so eloquently, “The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.”
It is with this wonder in mind that I hope you will allow me to help you find your dreams!
I’m sure Grandma Erma would agree.
